Art and Architecture

Art in ancient Greece didn't start until 340 B.C.E the Greeks invented the Greek Buddist Art style-a combination of Greek art and Buddist art. Greek architecture started with columns in 3450 B.C.E. They invented ornaments around the house in 50 B.C.E. but statues came in 330 B.C.E. The Greeks invented temples in 3200 B.C.E. Each temple had statues and paintings of a specific God that the Greeks worshipped.

Most art was a statue, painting, or carving of a famous person such as a writer or hero.

Government

Oligarchy means ruled by the wealthy. The more money meant the more power you had. Monarchy means to have one ruler. Monarchy, ruled by either a king or queen was passed on from person to person. Tyranny means to be governed by a cruel ruler where the people have no say. In a tyranny government, when the ruler is killed, the person who murdered him becomes king and the people have no say in their ruler. Democracy is when people have the right to vote, this means only men vote. A democracy is where people elect the king and the people make the choices of the city together.

Education

In Sparta, children went through military training school from ages seven to eighteen, after that they went to military training outside school for two years. Spartans believed that healthy women gave birth to strong babies so they had to be athletic to.
People in Athens learned to fight, write and read. They learned math, music and other physical training from ages seven to eighteen. After that they went through extra public speaking training for two years. In school they used wax boards and sticks to write, afterwards the board would be smoothed and reused for each class. In gym classes they usually did running, long jump, and fighting practice with wood swords. Once they turned twelve, the students used real weapons to practice.

Shelter

In Ancient Greece, families houses were made of clay tiles, mud brick and wood flooring. In the middle of the house there was a courtyard. Most houses had more than one family living in them. The clay tiles were used on the roof and the walls were made of mud brick. Women had their own room which was on the top floor of the two floors in the houses where they did the cooking, the cleaning and the sewing. The men area was on the bottom floor, with a dining room, a living room and their bedrooms. There was a room in the back of the house were both men and women could go. Beds were made of wood with a thick blanket on the top as a cushion. They used a thin sheet as a blanket. People sat on sheep skin chairs with cloth over them. The table was made of wood and was meant for 4 people. In the center of the house their was a courtyard.

Temples were used to please gods and to honour them. They had large columns that are made of marble with detailed carvings at the top. The columns were made of marble so the columns would last longer. In the temple there were statues and paintings of the god that they were being worshiped in that temple.

The Olympics

The first Olympics started as short races. Later, longer races were made as well as javelin, discus throwing, boxing, wrestling and chariot races were added last. You were only allowed to compete in the Olympics if you were 18 and able to fight. The purpose of the Olympics was to honour the gods and to cause peace throughout Greece. If you were in Greece at the time of the Olympics, you were not allowed to wage war. The Olympics were held once every four years. The first Olympics were held in 776 B.C.E. The Olympics was a five day event. The competitors competed for an Olive leaf wreath from a sacred olive tree and for honour in their town or city.They also earned free meals and statues made in there name.Some city's said you didn't pay taxes for the rest of your life.the men in the Olympics competed naked so the women would not come because women were not aloud to go to the Olympics.

Clothing in Ancient Greek

Men's Clothing and Armor

Men wore tunics called chiton. Over the chitons they wore a wool cloth called a himation. Men wore linin shorts. The men wore armor to war that weighed up to 130 pounds. The men had an argitive shield made of wood. They had a leather apron on the lower part of their body. The upper body armor is called a curteous and was made from stiffened linen or bronze. Only rich people could actually buy bronze. They also wore armor on their legs called greaves, which were also made of bronze. The men also had helmets made of bronze and they had a crest made of horsehair. The bronze helmet weighed 10 pounds well the argitive shield weighed 20 pounds. The sandels weighed 5 pounds. The greeves weighed 10 pounds. The bronze curteous weighed 85 pounds. the stiffen linin curteous weighed 75 pounds. all together that weighed up to 115 pounds to 130 pounds.
